INSIDE THE ARTIST’S STUDIO: Carlie DeGaetano
There is music in the background, but that is not the focus of the room. It’s all about the color. Corals and lavenders, cerulean and ochres are feasts for the eyes. The artist is sitting in front of an easel, a mix of acrylics on the palette. It’s almost as though she is immersed in buckets of paint. Even after I enter the studio, Carlie cannot tear herself away from “just this bit of color here to change the focal point”. While this piece dries, she moves to another painting in progress and touches up the blues before she is ready to talk.
Carlie DeGaetano is also an experienced watercolorist who can effortlessly transform a basic color palette into masterful landscapes and flowers. She says, however, that she is evolving into an abstract painter and mixed media artist and wants to add unexpected “quirks” to her work to make them more fun. Some of her more recent pieces are cityscapes with collaged papers, crooked buildings and rich colors. They are cities that we would all love to live in, filled with life and humor.
A member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, Carlie has exhibited often in their juried exhibitions. Other exhibit venues include the Post Road Art Center in Marlborough, the Amazing Things Art Center in Framingham, Pejamajo Cafe’ in Holliston and at the annual Holliston Mill Open Studios.
Carlie also teaches watercolor. Her painting style comes so naturally to her that students easily gain the confidence they need to learn quickly.
